TACHIBANA CLAN
Tachibana Clan Transparent
Name: Tachibana Clan
Founder: Musashi no Taira | Jushiro no Fujiwara
Location: Kyūgakure no Sato, Kazangakure no Sato, Land of Ash

History: Myths and Folklore would speaking of how the Tachibana clan was to have been founded when the siblings by the goddess of the sun, Amaterasu-no-Mikoto, and the god of the moon, Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto, had a son, combining their two energies, creating the god of storm, Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto.

The Tachibana clan was founded through the unification of two great clans during the peak of the warring states period. The Taira clan and the Fujiwara clans had been long standing rivals for decades, primarily over their differing philosophies, for the Taira clan believed in Sei and the Fujiwara believed in Dou.

Musashi no Taira and Jushiro no Fujiwara had both had been the first clan heads to break the cycle when they learned that they were in fact long lost brothers. Together they had joined together, creating a new clan, the Minamoto clan. They both had many sons and daughters, however the two most notable were Sōsuke no Taira and Genji no Fujiwara. While both clans had used both Sei & Dou styles before, Sōsuke had been the first person to tap into natural energy and fully utilize Sei natural energy and Genji had been the first to fully utilize Dou energy.

Intent on passing on their knowledge of natural energy to the world the two cousins had taken on a prodigal child as a student. Mikoto no Tachibana. In spite of many of their clansmen protest against teaching an outsider the clan's secrets, much less to a woman, they had nevertheless both trained Kasuga. After many years, Mikoto had been the first person to combine both energies into Sei-Dou energy.

Once she had mastered both energies, Mikoto had challenged both cousins to a fight for the right to change the unified clan's name to Tachibana. Both brothers had fought Kasuga together, however their combined skill was no match for her. After killing both cousins, before she could be instated as the new head of the unified clan, she had been killed by a sneak attack from her husband, Fugaku no Tachibana. Fugaku had always protest to his wife being trained by Sōsuke and Genji, and he had come to learn that his feelings weren't misplaced as Mikoto had been having an affair with both cousins.

While such a cowardly act would only get him killed in the modern day, at the time, Fugaku killing Mikoto meant he was the new rightful leader of the clan. The Minamoto clan had there forth been renamed the Tachibana clan, and Fugaku, out of resentment for his wife, had passed a law within the clan that all women were hence forth deemed below second hand citizens within the clan. Mikoto name was erased from the clan's public history.

Thereafter, for years the Tachibana clan continued on as one of the greatest mercenary clans within the lands. For a fee, men were sold into eternal service to villages and the women were sold as wives. The Dan system was then created to establish a hierarchy within the class. The clan was divided into two branches, the Taira and the Fujiwara, coexisting as one clan.

~1112: The Tachibana clan establish Kyūgakure, a small village just outside of Kazangakure, as their home village and Kazangakure as their patron village.
~1130: Women were given right to become official Samurai if they so choose.

Special Info:

  • There are two branches within the clan, the Fujiwara Branch and the Taira Branch. There is no difference between the two branches except their slightly differing philosophies. The two branches may at times have disputes, but they see their differences as good as it keeps the clan from becoming a complete monarchy as both sides have equal rights and power.

  • Upon becoming an official Samurai, all clansmen are paired with a member of the opposing branch with an energy type opposite to their own. This is used so that they may both help and grow together.

  • The Tachibana maintains a hierarchy in the form of a "Dan" ranking. Strength is the most important aspect within the clan and the higher a person's Dan, the higher their status. The different ranks of Dans comprises of a set number of positions, and killing a member in an official dual is all that's needed to take their position. As all duals are to the death, there are ever only so many high ranking official positions within the clan.

    • Ju Dan - The Ju Dan is considered the leader of the clan. He controls the entire clan through his two Kyu Dan and within the clan he is referred to as the the Emperor.

    • Kyu Dan - Serving the Ju Dan directly are two members, his right hand & left hand men, the Kyu Dan. Both represent the two branches of the clan, the Taira and the Fujiwara. They are known as the Shoguns and pass laws.

    • Hachi Dan - There are five Hachi Dan, who make up the clan's council and serve as the clan's daimyo, each reigning over the five regions of Kyūgakure.  They oversee all of the clan's internal politics and votes when the two Kyu Dans have disputes. They have a very faceless roles, with many seeing them as civilians, with even their families being unknown to anyone below them.

    • Shichi Dan - There are ten Shichi Dan, their families making up the ten royal families. They handle all of the clan's external politics. They rely upon the noble families' money, however the noble families relies heavily upon their connections. They are considered "kings" and "queens" and to the outside world they are the believed leaders of the village.

    • Roku Dan - There are twenty-five Roku Dans, their families making up the twenty-five noble families. They have little to no actual political power, however most of the clan's money flows through these families and they oversee the clan's finances. They rely upon the royal families' connections, while the royal family rely upon their money. They are considered "princes" and "princesses", with most of their families being amongst the most commonly put into arranged marriages.

    • Go Dan - The Go Dan comprises of one hundred members who makes up the clan's "Hunter Nins" and "Mercenaries". They are considered by the clan as "Special Ronin" and have renounced their family name, however are still considered a part of the clan. While not as powerful as the higher dans, for their service, by most they are as respected almost as much as the Kyu Dan and are in fact considered "Lords". To the outside, they are perceived to be the clan's best swordsmen, each ranked in strength. They are regularly used as leverage and tools by the Shichi, and sometimes, Roku Dan.

    • Yon Dan - The Yon Dan comprises of twenty-five Generals who oversee the clan's regular foot soldiers and are in charge of the twenty-five divisions of the clan's army, grooming them into the Go Dan and beyond. They are commissioned by the clan's noble families and, as such, in most cases report only to them.

    • San Dan - The San Dan comprises of one hundred members, who are known as the "proteges". They are each tutored by a member of the Go Dan so as to someday take their spot. Like Go Dan, they are considered "Special Ronin", however they do not share the same prestige.

    • Ni Dan - There is no limit to the Ni Dan rank and they are considered the clan's regular foot soldiers. They make up 60% of the clan's population.

    • Sho Dan - The New recruits and the lowest rank to be considered an "official" Samurai. They make up 30% of the clan's population.

  • To become an official Samurai, one must be able to perform the 1st Dan technique.

  • Women within the clan are recognized as the property of all men within the clan. A woman may choose to go against the orders of a male, but even if it's an unreasonable request she would henceforth be considered a disgrace to the clan. A man may not under any condition harm a non Samurai clans woman however, for this is punishable by seppuku. Failure to commit seppuku will result in execution and his whole family being executed.

  • Contrary to popular belief, a woman may in fact become a samurai, as there are in fact many high ranking samurais within the clan who enlisted after they were married. However, a woman who does so is extremely looked down upon and will not be protected by clan laws if harmed by a man. If a man gives such a woman an order and she refuses, she must challenge him to the death, in which case if he kills her the man will not be punished by the law, hence why there aren't many women who choose the path of the samurai.

  • Clan members go by the prefix "no" before the family name (ie. Kakashi no Tachibana).

  • All men must become Samurai and continue to serve as Samurai. Failure to do so is punishable by seppuku.

  • The head of a family represents the whole family and their Dan rank. If the head of a family is killed, then the families Dan ranking become that of the next highest ranking family member.

  • As part of their initiation ceremony as a Samurai and so as to ensure only the finest men become great Samurai, members of the clan are expected to give either one of their eyes or their dominant hand so as that they may learn to compensate and get stronger in spite of their disability. Clan members aren't compelled to do so, however not doing so is greatly looked down upon.

  • Clan members are known for their exceptional height/size, with the average male and female heights being 6’10” and 6’4”, respectively.

  • Clan members are known to have great vitality. They do not live longer than other people, but most clansmen are known to be in prime condition up to age eighty [80].

  • The Tachibana clan has always many wars over the years through a tactic they call the "Night & Day". Dou fighters, with their naturally superior condition, would fight their opponent during the "day" until they have exhausted themselves, and then Sei users would take over at "night" once they were warmed up.

  • Roughly 99% of women are Sei types and 75% of men are Dou types. Rare as it is, women who are Dou types are given special privileges. They are not considered property, having same rights as the men (including the ownership of Sei type women) and are called "Conquerors".
